Vegan Dog Food

Ingredients

  • 2 cup dried lentils
  • 1.5 cup dried blackeyed peas (or bean/pea of choice)
  • 0.5 cup brown rice, uncooked
  • 2 cup frozen vegetables (avoid onion, peppers and garlic)
  • 1 sweet potato, cubed
  • 0.5 cup nutritional yeast
  • 0.25 cup ground flax seeds
  • 0.5 cup peanut butter
  • Supplements (see Notes)

Instructions

  1. Place peas/beans, lentils, rice, frozen vegetables and sweet potato in a very large pot and cover with water.
  2. Bring to a boil, lower heat, and simmer for 1 1/2 - 2 hours. You want the peas and beans to be very well cooked because then they are easier to digest.
  3. Remove pan from heat and drain off excess water, if any.
  4. Using a potato masher, mash everything together (for easier digestion, again).
  5. While still hot, add peanut butter and stir until it melts.
  6. Let mixture cool for 20-30 minutes.
  7. Stir in nutritional yeast and ground flax seeds
  8. I add supplements to each individual serving instead of to the whole pot. See notes for suggestions.
